Degrees of protection provided by enclosures according to ISO 20653

Protection of electrical equipment in road vehicles provided by enclosures

Since ATM devices are integrated into vehicles, qualification according to ISO 20653 “Road vehicles – Protection of electrical equipment against foreign objects, water and access” can be carried out at the customer’s request.

The international standard ISO 20653 specifies the degree of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment in road vehicles. It defines testing requirements for protection against foreign bodies, access and water. Electrical devices inside the enclosure must therefore be protected against the ingress of foreign bodies, including dust. Dangerous parts inside the enclosure must not be accessible to persons. Finally, it must be ensured that the enclosure is protected from the ingress of water.

For this purpose, the ISO 20653 defines the protection class in the form of IP codes, which indicate the suitability of the electrical equipment for various environmental conditions. IP stands for “International Protection” or “Ingress Protection”. For certain protection classes, ISO 20653 adds the letter “K”, which defines the degree of protection more precisely and includes stricter requirements concerning use in road vehicles.
